Take 5: Duane McLaughlin

If you need to be inspired, stand next to Duane McLaughlin. In person, McLaughlin carries himself with a calm, relaxed and positive demeanor. On his Facebook Fan Page, he posts a "Motivator of the Day" message. His "Everyday Joe" persona hides the fact that he has excelled at modeling, acting and singing. At the Market America International Convention 2010, you will get to see him perform live.

1. As a singer, model and actor, which one do you identify with the most? How about when you wake up? Driving? What about on the couch relaxing?

(Laughter) I identify with them all. Last I recall they were all the same person. (Laughter) No but seriously, I try to be myself in every situation I am involved in. That is the only way I can truly enjoy what I am doing.

2. What was it like to be Dallas Griffin on As The World Turns?

It was an amazing life experience that I was blessed to have. Some of the best years of my life were spent on that set. It’s interesting; soap opera work is not as easy as some may perceive it to be.

Everyday we filmed a new episode, sometimes two. I can recall several instances when I would show up for work at 6AM and had to memorize 10 pages of new material in one hour. At times such as those it wasn’t the best feeling, but when the episodes aired a month later, you really appreciated the hard work put in. I thank God for that opportunity.

3. What song do you identify with the most and will you be performing it at convention?

Truthfully, I identify with them all. They each touch a part of my life that that is still relevant. That’s the beauty of motivational music. Our lives are forever coping with highs and lows, and for either, we learn something that we did not know before. No matter what obstacles arise, motivation will always help you to persevere. I will be performing three songs from the I Believe: Market America Concert Series, I’m very excited.

4. Every artist goes through trials and tribulations. What was a notable one of yours?

Trials and tribulations are things we all must go through. As an artist, I sometimes struggle with impatience. I believe that my passion for music is something that I have been given for a specific purpose, and it can be difficult at times when I must be patient and allow the purpose to manifest.

5. What was your most embarrassing moment on stage and what did you learn from it?

(Laughter) The journey has been…very interesting I must say. My most embarrassing moment would have to be my very first live performance. I was so young, seven or eight maybe, and my mother hosted a local talent showcase for a benefit in Queens, New York. I had never performed in front of an audience, and prior to that day I was so sure it would be easy. For anyone who has never performed in front of an audience, there’s a thing called stage fright you definitely want to look out for.

Anyway, my talent was singing, and for two weeks I rehearsed the song I Believe by Frank Sinatra. I promise you, I am not making this up! The connection with Sinatra’s I Believe is completely coincidental! Well as the night went on, more and more people were showing up. It was as if they never stopped coming through the doors.

I can remember sitting as close to the bathroom as I possibly could. I had made the decision that when that dreadful moment came where my name was called, I was running inside and locking the door, that was the plan. As my mother took center stage in this quaint neighborhood-catering hall, there were at least 200 people in the audience and kids everywhere, mostly my age. I wasted no time, before my name could even leave her lips I dashed for the bathroom, only to find the door locked from the inside. My only other option was the women’s bathroom next door.

I burst through without hesitation. I could hear my mother over the speakers calling me repeatedly to the stage. But I was not going anywhere. Then I heard someone outside say I was in the bathroom. I was trapped with nowhere to hide. Unfortunately there was a woman using the single stall, and I was desperate. So here I am, this little kid dressed in the tackiest suit you could find, crawling underneath and into a bathroom stall while a woman is doing her business!

Between her scream and my mother’s scream when she arrived in the bathroom, I don’t know which was worse. But neither mattered because my mother made sure I got up on that stage and sang that song, and surprisingly….they all loved it. All but that woman I ran in on I’m sure.

Who is next to go on American Idol?

Simon is preparing for X-Factor. Paula Abdul is still gone. Top celebrity names keep getting floated around, but none have sunk in. Ellen Degeneres has quit. According TMZ, Kara DioGuardi has been fired. Where does Randy stand in all this? Who knows.

What I do know is that it's time to see what X-Factor can do because American Idol has lost his touch. I couldn't tell you who won the last few years.

None the less, this season will happen and New York auditions are a couple weeks away. I wonder if Ryan Seacrest will say "Who will be the last American Idol?" this year. If you were dreaming of stardom, this may be your last chance to be on the show.

Top 10 Star Spangled Spectacles

It's an honor to sing the national anthem in a stadium. It's also an honor to be in the audience when the singer bombs.

Over at Billboard.com, Monica Herrera compiled her list of the Top 10 worst National Anthems Ever. I would beg to differ on a few.

Herrera is talking about the stars we know. Well, I would consider one amateur to be an overnight celebrity. We can't forget the Canadian woman who tried to sing our national anthem at a hockey game and forgot the words. She left the ice to read the words again and walked back on the ice only to slip and fall. That one is still #1 in my book.

Guess what today is...

It's National Daiquiri Day! Who comes up with this stuff?

Read the legend of the original daiquiri here.

The original daiquiri is made with rum, sugar and lime juice. For an easier time with it, use simple syrup (regular sugar and water boiled down) and a juicer for the limes.

If you follow the same method and leave out the alcohol, it's fresh limeade. Either way, its quite tasty over ice.

What about slushies? Wouldn't be too much trouble to throw the drink in the blender, would it? Not at all. From a quick search on the Internet, I cannot find a national slushie day. So I say scoot over daiquiris. There is enough room for a National Slushie/Daiquiri Day today.

Carlos Santana gets engaged to drummer after solo

Cindy Blackman must have laid down some drum solo in Tinley Park, Illinois last Friday because it was enough to make Carlos Santana pop the question.

I'm sure he had that planned out before. She said yes. I wonder what the wedding cake will look like and if they'll have the wedding on stage too.

Hulk recast for Avengers in 2012

In this story, it appears that there are some mixed feelings as to why Edward Norton won't be coming back as the Hulk.

The studio claims to need someone who works better with a team. Norton's agent says it's about the money.

Whatever it is, I'd be more than happy to go ahead and pre-pay my ticket now to see the Avengers if that would help cover some of the salaries. With Samuel Jackson, Scarlett Johanssonn, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr., you know the film isn't cheap.

But alas, this is Marvel. The same people that killed Captain America. The same people that had Peter Parker agree to a deal with Mephisto that erased 6 years of story lines and rebooted the comic to the dismay of some loyal readers.

Say what you want, but those folks at Marvel make life interesting. Who will be the next Hulk? Guess we'll just have to sit back and hope their second choice is the right the one.

LeBron gets heat for picking Heat.

I'm not a fan of LeBron James, but I have to side with him on his decision to choose the Miami Heat. He wants a championship. Why not go to a stacked deck?

Opinion pieces, commentators and even the Cavs owner have stuck it to him and like to tout loyalty and honor as things that have been tarnished... I think we forget that James is paid for what he does.

Find 12 NBA stars willing to play 5-7 years for free. That's loyalty and honor. This is pro sports in America. It's a business.

Having a championship win is still part of the business, but there is something else to it. It's knowing you won.

And who doesn't want to be on a winning team? See if you can remember back to playing basketball or football outside as a kid. I hated when it was time to pick teams because I was one of the ones usually picked last. The only redeeming quality of being picked last is to be on the winning team. There is also something else that happens from time to time.

The guys who usually win strategically place the others on one team. Jocks vs nerds, Skinny kids vs fat kids, shirts vs skins, winners vs losers. At that point, you either accept your fate and get destroyed or someone stands up and takes some leadership. As Magneto said to Pyro in X-Men, "You are god among ants." Make one basket and you're good. Make another and you're golden. More ball time, more scores... isn't that what you wanted? Well yeah, but I want to win, too.

You still usually lose, but when you make yourself standout like that, the winners sometimes take notice. And on the next game, you might be a middle person picked on the winning team.

James was asked if it would've been sweeter to win a championship in Cleveland at his press conference. Are you kidding? That's like getting upset because your baby took his first steps in the hallway and not the living room. It doesn't matter where it happens. It matters that it happened.

Winning is winning whether it's by a little or a lot. Same with losing. Losers want to win. Winners want to keep winning. If Wade, Bosh and James can keep their egos in check and play to the best of their abilities, they'll win.

The Cavs owner declared they'd win a championship before the Heat. Who do they have on the Cavs' team that can lead them? Let's see if they can pull it off. The odds aren't in their favor, but stranger things have happened.

LeBron shows he’s king in name only

Warcraft Revolt! Plans in place to use real names.

Blizzard, the company that owns World Of Warcraft or "WOW", has put a plan in place to convert gaming names to the real names of users on discussion boards.

I've used a discussion board on the internet a time or two and there are all sorts of people out there who are bothersome. And now there names will be known.

For the internet savvy, this means it's easier to seek revenge on flamers and trolls. These are the folks who would rather insult you, instigate an argument and generally create chaos when all you wanted was an answer to a question.

Can you imagine that "SoulslayerX47" is actually Joe Doe and a simple search online reveals that there may be only 10 Joe Doe's in the U.S.? A little more research via social networks and various internet address books and you could probably nail down exactly which one is your troll or flamer. I'll leave your mind to drum up all the revenge scenarios possible. Might feel good for a second, right?

Now look at this from another angle... No not the flamer's angle. What about from a parent's perspective. I have no idea how many pedophiles (potential, alleged or convicted) are playing this game, but they now know my child's name. Repeat the same process in the earlier paragraph and the pedophile can figure out where you live and thanks to certain map applications, can figure out how much gas it would take to get to you and back home.

Now for all intents and purposes, let's put those two scenarios together. There is a flamer that has been annoying you and your pals on a message board for a while. Insults have been thrown back and forth and the flamer says something to the effect of "Why don't you come do something about it?" knowing that you'll never find out where they live. The "real name" change up goes into effect so you go back to the message board and behold! SoulslayerX47's name is actually Joe Doe.

You look through past posts and see one where he said something obnoxious about representing... Arkansas. You check on facebook and see 5 Joe Doe's in Arkansas. A quick look at their profiles and one says "I pwn noobs in W.O.W." Bingo. There is your man. So you guys get there to scare the hell out of this guy and it's actually a 14 year old girl. Joe was short for Joelle and now you have to explain to the police, the court, the news media and your boss why you were there. Think it won't happen? Stranger things have.

After being bothered by flamers and sometimes being one myself, I think there should be a safety plan involved with this. Start the message board over. New post counts, new avatars and everything. This would allow everyone to start from scratch and give trolls and flamers the chance for redemption along with cooling the heels of those ready to exact payback.

Can't we all just get along? If only online?

'WOW' players angry over plan to use real names

If you can't be an action hero, smell like one.

Grapefruit, pepper and vetiver. Get a whiff of that in the morning! But be careful, it's a scene that could attract bad guys... and girls.

Bruce Willis (The Die Hard Series) has come out with his own fragrance which is self-titled. Yes, you too can know what it smells like to be an action star without having to jump barefooted from exploding rooftops, shooting foreign bad guys bent on world destruction and saying classic one-liners like "Yippie ka yay..." If you've seen the movies, you can finish that line.

I, for one, would love to know what being an action hero smells like without being shot, held hostage or thing blowing up around me. Not shaving my head though.

The line includes hair and body wash. All I want to know is if it comes with sound effects and a soundtrack.

Former Hot Dog Eating Champ arrested.

Takeru Kobayashi was arrested after trying to get on stage at the Nathan's International Hotdog Eating Contest on July 4th, 2010. He has pled not guilty to the charges of resisting arrest and trespassing.

You may remember his domination of hotdog eating contests that renewed interest in the sport. And yes... it's considered a sport.

Unfortunately, contract disputes with Major League Eating (MLE) prevented his return to the stage. According to the ESPN story, the crowd's chanting for Kobayashi inspired him to take the stage in the hopes that officials would let him compete. Joey Chestnut won the competition taking out 54 hotdogs in 10 minutes.

In the video taken by TMZ, you can hear people in the background chanting "Free Kobi!"

There is only one way to settle this and that's in the ring! Steel Cage Hotdog Eating Battle Royale!

So he is the new Spider-man?

Andrew Garfield. You know him? I think I went to school with a guy named Andrew Garfield... is that him? Probably not.

Garfield is British and is one of the new kids on the block in the UK, so people over there love him. For the most part, Americans will say "Who?"

We've had a good run at the past Spider-man movies. If the new series is terrible, we can always go back and watch the others in High Definition. I think they should give the Spider-man series a rest for another 10 years and focus on some of the other superheroes. Equality in the Marvel Universe!

Conquer Entertainment, proud partner of Market America, is the next paradigm shift in the music industry. Last night we had our first University Major Overview also known as UMO which is a simple step by step training on what and who Conquer Entertainment is, how we can help you grow your business right in the heart of New York City's, Time Square. We had a full house and a very special guest speaker JR Ridinger, CEO of Market America along with Dennis Franks aka Mr. Energy, Executive Vice President of Market America, Amanda Ridinger, CEO of Conquer Entertainment, April Benson, Vice President of Training for Conquer Entertainment and Jamar Brown a Conquer Entertainment artist himself. They spoke about the history of music, where it came from and how it’s evolved the past few decades and how the recording industry is failing, but yet the Music industry is evolving and thriving on the Internet with downloads and distribution.

Overall, it was an overwhelming success, as they demonstrated the Market America University Major Overview (UMO), tying together the power of music and the power of the Management performance Compensation Plan (MPCP). Conquer Entertainment also had a special performance from their very own Shiragirl who performed her song, "Sick Day," which was entirely worked on through Conquer Entertainment from song, production to even her video through our talented service providers that have worked with artist such as Jay-Z, Gwen Stefani, Swizz Beats, and Beyonce. Jamar Brown, aka "Black," also spoke on his experience as an UnLabel Owner (ULO) and a featured artist. He sang acapella to a song he wrote when he was just 16 years old entitled "Truth About History". Our very own Vice President of training also sang an acoustic version of a song called "Saying Sorry."

We were very excited to have a lot of new artist come out, producers, engineers, and managers that stayed towards the end for some Q&A with the Conquer staff. Everyone is very excited about Conquer Entertainment and all we kept hearing from the crowd was "we’ve been waiting for you to launch, and now that you have, we are excited to get this business rockin’ & rollin’!"

Our next big event will be coming up on July 17th with the Babes Burnin’ Rubber concert to fight breast cancer. We're working in conjunction with the Susan G. Come join us for the new pop sounds of Dennis Franks and the Honey James Band, the rap/funk music of Sunday, an alternative rock band, along with Silent Sleep, Punk Rocker Shiragirl, who is currently performing with Van’s Warped Tour, Rock Grunge band, Beyond the Element, and the Hip Hop beats of Justina, King Charlton, and JB aka "Black".

Also, celebrity go-kart racing with our very own JR Ridinger, Dennis Franks, Patrick Dempsey and others will take place! This is what Conquer Entertainment can do for you.

Movie Review: The Last Airbender

I never watched the cartoon. Didn't know any of the characters or their storylines. I remember seeing the trailer and watching a kid, in monk's clothing, blowing out candles with hand strikes and kicks. And then he hit the ground with his staff and the rest blew out. Awesome. It's a fight film. Right up my alley.

Well the first thing that struck me is that this is chapter one, The Book of Water. So prepare for at least 3 more to complete the series of elements. (Water, Earth, Fire. He already has Air.)

So it starts off in another world with Katara who is the last waterbender of her village in the south and her brother who seems to be terrible at hunting. They stumble upon a light coming out of the ice and decide to bust it open to see what is inside. Out pops Ong... or Aang... Just pick one and run with it. He's the avatar that's can weild all of the elements.

Well the Fire Nation is running around beating up on people and Ong/Aang and company begin their whirlwind(no pun intended) rescue of captured villages while heading north so our protagonist can learn the water element. Wait... shouldn't he already know all of the elements? Well, yes if he continued his training. But he decided that the whole Avatar business was too much for him and he ran away. Lucky for him he was caught up in a storm and a protective ice barrier surrounded him and gave him enough air for a hundred years. Before you ask, I would like to remind you that this is a cartoon turned into a live action movie so logic is not wanted nor needed.

No need for spoilers here. It's chapter 1. You know Ong/Aang survives. A good guy dies; a bad guy dies... the classic layout. Fight scenes were decent. There were no moments that would have me pretending to have a fight with my shadow when no one is looking.

Is it kid safe? (Rated PG) I think so for about 8 and up. Not knowing anything about the story, I was able to follow it pretty well. Cursing was kept to a minimum if there was any. Blood was hard to spot. A fish was stabbed, but you don't actually see the fish being stabbed. There is a drowning, but facial expressions are covered by small waves of water. Even the final fight scene that looked as though it could've been as bloody as something from Bravehart or Lord of The Rings seemed to be missing blood and bodies when the fighting was over with.

Was it worth the money to see the 3D version? I say no. There weren't too many things flying at the camera. I must have missed all the classic 3D gimmics and I did remove my glasses at certain parts of the film because I was tired of looking through them when the clarity was halfway decent, in some cases, without it.

Would I go see it again? Yes. Especially in 2D and during matinee times when it's cheaper.
