Janet Opens Up to Robin Roberts About Grief, Future Plans

Janet Jackson's highly anticipated interview with ABC's Robin Roberts revealed a vulnerable side of the singer/actor, and much insight to her relationship with her late brother, Michael Jackson, and how she and her family are coping with the loss. An emotional and "nervous" Janet recounted their growing up together, her own career path, and where she sees herself heading career-wise and personally from here. She was very open to answering all of Roberts' questions, including those about her brother and the circumstances surrounding his death. Here's a clip from Janet Jackson's interview with ABC News' Robin Roberts, in case you missed it.

Shakira's Double Life

One of our dearest Market America friends, Shakira, has been making headlines recently with her sexy, new single, She Wolf. In the video, Shaki transforms into a "she wolf", howling at the moon, and dancing seductively in her cage. Shakira is also well known for her sexy belly-dance moves and larger-than life stage performances, but in real life, she's as down to earth as the rest of us. Check out this article from Yahoo, that reveals Shakira's secret identity.

"I used to wear a cap and a big backpack," Shakira explained. "I looked like a boy. I didn't get recognized."

Interesting! It's hard to believe that nobody would recognize the Colombian pop superstar. Read all about it here.

Cryptic Tweet Signals Date for New Rihanna Release!

"The Wait Is Ova. Nov. 23 09."

Whether it's the title for her new single or the beginning of a viral marketing ad campaign, or both; one thing's for sure: Rihanna has sent tongues wagging with the sparse Twitter message featured above.

According to CNN, The only other object fans can mine for clues about the singer's upcoming release is the logo, a metallic nail fashioned into a crudely shaped "R" that has swarmed the Internet.

A new album would also mark the first since Rihanna's very public fight with former boyfriend and R&B singer, Chris Brown. CNN.com said, those who've worked with the star on the record have said to expect something with more ferocity. "Expect an edgier, almost angrier Rihanna on this one," Ne-Yo told E! Online. "Rihanna says some things on this album that you've never heard her say before."

Patrick Swayze's Book Reflects on His Life

America has been saddened by the loss of another great pop culture icon. Patrick Swayze, 57, lost his 20 month battle against pancreatic cancer this week. The popular Hollywood actor was best known for his role as Johnny Castle in the 80s cult classic, Dirty Dancing.

His memoir, The Time of My Life, will be released on September 29th. The book was co-written by his wife of 34 years, Lisa Niemi, and contains excerpts that have been received by NBC News and People Magazine.

In the memoir, Swayze wrote, "I began thinking to myself that I’ve had more lifetimes than any 10 people put together, and it’s been an amazing ride. So this is okay."

What an inspiring spirit! This man obviously had an interesting take on life and death. You can read more from Patrick Swayze's point-of- view in his memoir, The Time of My Life. Pre-order your copy from BarnesandNoble.com.

Music Legend Les Paul Dies at 94

Today is a sad, sad day in the music world. Another great musical legend, Les Paul, has passed away. According to Gibson Guitar, the 94-year-old musician died from complications of pneumonia. Paul was best known for his collaborations with such musicians as Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby; but most famously, he is known for the invention of what is known today as the electric guitar.

The Associated Press reports, "In the 1930s he began experimenting with guitar amplification, and by 1941 he had built what was probably the first solid-body electric guitar, although there are other claimants. With his electric guitar and the vocals of his wife, Mary Ford, he used overdubbing, multitrack recording and new electronic effects to create a string of hits in the 1950s."

Read Paul's full biography here. One thing's for sure; we'll be jammin' out to Paul's tunes over the weekend in remembrance of this musical legend.

Get to Know the Creative Mind Behind Siete: Q&A Session with Alejandro Sanz!

Alejandro Sanz is known as one of the world’s most successful musicians, having won multiple Grammy Awards and sold more than 25 million albums internationally. Recently, the Spanish born singing sensation has moved into a new arena, that of personal fragrance. Simply named Siete-- Spanish for seven-- both the men’s and women’s scents are a unique blend of seven scent notes, a playful nod to the seven notes of the musical scale.

Market America is thrilled to now offer both the men’s and women’s versions of Siete on www.marketamerica.com. In honor of the occasion, we asked Alejandro to share some of his thoughts on Siete.

Why did you make the decision to create a personal fragrance?

It was something that just suddenly occurred to me and I was drawn to the idea from the start. I’m a man of sense and feeling [and] the sense of smell is as important as any other. People’s fragrance says a lot about them... it’s a non-verbal language that has a lot to say.

Siete stands for the seven notes of the musical scale and for the seven scent notes found in the fragrance. How else is siete a reflection of you or your music?

The number seven has been my favorite since I was a child. Besides the seven notes of the scale, there are seven deadly sins, Seven Wonders of the World, seven days in the week... seven is a number that is present in no end of things.

How involved were you in the creation of Siete?

I smelled a number of essences and I wanted to capture the scents of my childhood. Scents from important personal moments, the scent of sensuality, of authenticity, the scent of my essence.

What inspires you both in music and in the creation of a fragrance?

Life itself is my greatest inspiration. When you feel alive and receptive to life, feelings flow and automatically become art.

Experience Siete for yourself! Take advantage of special pricing on Siete when you purchase from the "Hot Deals" tab on Alejandro's My World featured artist page, or from marketamerica.com!

It is rumored that the effort's other new song is titled "Revolver" and is a collaboration with Lil Wayne. A demo version of the song -- without Madonna's vocals -- has been floating around YouTube since May.

While the tracklist for "Celebration" has yet to be announced, one can imagine a bevy of Madonna's Billboard Hot 100 hits will be included. On the Hot 100 chart, she has racked up a record 37 top 10 singles -- more than any other act in the tally's nearly 51-year history. Of those hits, 12 of them went all the way to No. 1.

In a press release, her label confirmed that "Celebration" will contain songs "remastered and selected by Madonna and her fans" including "Everybody," "Express Yourself," "Vogue" and "4 Minutes."

The press release announcing "Celebration" touts that the DVD is set to include some of Madonna's iconic video clips that have "never before been available on DVD." (Perhaps the too-hot-for-MTV "Justify My Love?")

Torn? We are Too...

Here's What's been on our minds; ponder this as the weekend arrives:

"I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day. "

~E. B. White

Has anyone discovered an effective way to balance both? We'd love to hear your advice.

Whitney Houston Brings 'I Look To You' Album To New York

Whitney Houston(image via billboard.com)
Whitney Houston held a listening event for her upcoming album, "I Look To You," last night (July 21) at Lincoln Center's Allen Room in New York City. Hosted by Clive Davis, the event was attended by Swizz Beatz, Alicia Keys, L.A. Reid, Martha Stewart, Diane Sawyer, Gayle King, Steve Harvey, Monica, R. Kelly, Vivica Fox and Freddie Jackson, among many others.

A total of nine songs off the album were played, starting with the Beatz-produced and Keys-penned "Million Dollar Bill," a club-friendly track which finds Houston belting lyrics like, "if he makes you feel like a million dollar bill, say oh oh."

Other songs premiered at the event included a cover of the Leon Russell track, "A Song For You" and the R. Kelly-written "Salute." R. Kelly also wrote the title track, produced by Tricky Stewart and Harvey Mason Jr.

A similar event was held in London last week.

Here is the track-listing for "I Look For You":

"Million Dollar Bill"
"Nothin' But Love"
"Call You Tonight"
"I Look To You"
"Like I Never Left" (featuring Akon)

Michael Jackson Theatrical Release Deal Close

Michael Jackson(image via billboard.com)
Sources have confirmed to Billboard that a deal between the Michael Jackson Estate, AEG Live and Sony for a theatrical release of the Michael Jackson rehearsal footage from the ill-fated This Is It concerts could close today, though there are still some "unsettled terms" that are being negotiated. In fact, the deal is in such flux that it could shift to another studio by the end of the day. According to the source, Sony Music may co-invest with one of the film studios on this release, including Sony Pictures.

The This Is It special has been conceived as a tribute to MJ featuring Janet, The Jackson 5, and other major performers. The source says Joe Jackson has been shopping his own Jackson Family special on MJ's birthday on Aug. 29, which neither Janet Jackson nor the Jackson brothers have agreed to.

Album Review: Brad Paisley - American Saturday Night

After 10 years and 10 straight No. 1 singles, Brad Paisley has got it down: He knows what his fans want and he gives it to them. His well-crafted new album is no different. Paisley hits all the right notes, literally and figuratively, weighing in on skinny dippin', beer, fishing, technology, children and women, among other all-American topics. "Then," a multiweek No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, speaks to long-lasting love and adoration and may be this decade's "Amazed." The soulful "Oh Yeah, You're Gone," which features blues rocker (and co-writer) Robben Ford, is the album's pearl and shows a side of Paisley he's rarely revealed. There's plenty of his trademark humor here as well. On "The Pants" he gleefully hands out sage advice to a stubborn man: "It's not who wears the pants, it's who wears the skirt." ~Ken Tucker

Michael Jackson is back on top of the Billboard Charts!

According to Billboard, albums by the pop singer -- who died suddenly last week at the age of 50 -- will occupy nine of the top 10 spots on the Top Pop Catalog Album chart being released on Wednesday.

Jackson's album "Number Ones" was No. 1 on sales of 108,000 copies during the week which ended on June 28 followed by "The Essential Michael Jackson" and "Thriller" on sales of 102,000 and 101,000 respectively.

Billboard, in an article on Billboard.com, said that last week, "Number Ones" was the only Jackson title on the chart. It was at No. 20 on sales of 4000 copies.

Billboard said Jackson's 1979 "Off the Wall" was at No. 4 on sales of 33,000 copies followed by "Bad" on sales of 17,000.

The Jackson 5's "The Ultimate Collection" was fifth on sales of 18,000 copies followed by "Dangerous," "Greatest Hits: HIStory - Volume 1" and "The Ultimate Collection".

Billboard said the only non-Jackson-related album in the top 10 was a reissue of the soundtrack from the movie "Woodstock", which was at No. 10 on sales of 8,000 copies.

Billboard said Jackson's solo albums sold 415,000 copies this past week compared with sales of just 10,000 copies in the week that ended June 21.

Billboard noted that sales of the top three selling Jackson albums were higher during the week than that of the best-selling album on the Billboard 200 charts, "The E.N.D." by the Black Eyed Peas, which sold 88,000 copies.

R.I.P. Michael Jackson

Sad, sad news has hit the music world today. Michael Jackson, the "King of Pop" passed away Thursday afternoon due to cardiac arrest. Jackson was fifty years old.

Legendary Jackson producer and long-time friend, Quincy Jones released an official statement Thursday:

"I am absolutely devastated at this tragic and unexpected news. For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don't have the words.

Divinity brought our souls together on The Wiz and allowed us to do what we were able to throughout the 80's.

To this day, the music we created together on "Off The Wall," "Thriller" and "Bad" is played in every corner of the world and the reason for that is because he had it all…talent, grace, professionalism and dedication.

He was the consummate entertainer and his contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever."

We are truly saddened by the news. Michael was one of the greatest artists of our time, and his music will live on in our hearts. Share your favorite Michael Jackson song / moment here.
